Doris' Story
For more than five years Doris cared for her
husband, who had suffered a stroke. Then she was diagnosed with cancer and needed
radiation therapy and an intensive, daily round of chemotherapy for two weeks.
Too ill to drive herself to treatment, and with her friends and family already
helping out, she turned to Volunteer Accompaniment Services (VAS).Their drivers
accompanied her to her daily chemotherapy sessions.Today she is in remission and
is grateful toVAS for the help she received. Last year West Island Community
Shares provided $15,000 to this volunteer-driven organization that provides
transportation services forWest Island cancer patients.
Enya's Story
Enya has four young children and is a single
mom. She has limited language skills and resources but an unlimited desire to
give her children a good start in life. The Pierrefonds Community Project (PCP)
is helping her do that. At PCP’s summer camp her children found an environment
where they could thrive. In PCP’s homework program her older children are
getting the encouragement they need to succeed academically. And, Enya is
learning to cope with the stress of parenting through PCP’s visiting mother
program. West Island Community Shares distributed $57,000 to PCP last year.
